This book was recommended to me by a friend, I was looking for a quick self-study course to improve my English. As a Norwegian, I am used to speaking English at a high level but I recently started some business with North America and I realized I need to go back to basics and pick up my level again. Also I have employees from different countries who need English practice.
My main issue is not vocabulary or grammar - what I really want to improve is getting a clear, logical message short, confident, to the point. I liked the idea of 'simple tools' for speaking and I was interested to see what tools this book contains.
The first unit is about pronunciation, which although interesting, isn't really my focus, so I skipped this and went straight to 'effective improvisation'. The first main 'tool' is about identifying the main topic in any situation and then splitting it into three subtopics, and then using this as a template to generate content. I found this to be spot-on for the 'focus' I want to develop. There are some set exercises for practice and I did these with one of my employees. We then used this template for our own products - identifying key product features/markets and then splitting these into subtopics. Great preparation for sales presentations. Then there is some stuff about comparing pictures in exams ...again, I skipped these.
The next unit (dynamic conversation) is about making a good connection in conversation so as a businessman I was very interested in this part. One of the 'tools' I liked especially was about 'cause and effect'. With examples, it shows how you can make an intelligent reply to someone by thinking about what they said and suggesting (1) why did it happen? (2) what might happen as a result? There are other tools like this and they are good for making more personal connections, and for zooming in on analytical points. The tools can also help you think of things to say that aren't just 'nothing' comments. The 'listening and reporting' tool is also very good.
The final two units are about giving presentations and doing job interviews - these units are on a quite basic level for me but I can imagine they will be useful for younger people who have just finished university, for example.
Although I only used two of the five units, this book was perfect for what I needed making conversations sharper and more focused. What I like about these speaking 'tools' is that they are designed to help you generate your own speaking content, for your own business needs or whatever the situation. Obviously a more business-focus would be even better for me and I wasn't really interested in the exam preparation, but it was worth buying just for these two units.
